New Year's Food Resolutions

It's that time again! Everyone fervently making lists of things they promise to do on January 1st, but forget about by January 10th. Since this is a food blog, I am interested to see if anyone has made any food resolutions for this coming year. Remember though, I don't want to hear anything about diets! :P

My resolutions are:

1. Stop buying traditional, non-organic, CAFO-type meats at the grocery store, even if they are cheaper. Organic, humane meats only.
2. Patronize farmer's markets and u-pick farms more frequently.
3. Learn more about home canning to make use of all of my u-picked goodies.
4. Purchase a water-filtration system to reduce my use of plastic water bottles.
5. And finally, attend more local food festivals and become more familiar with the foods in my area. I recently moved from south Florida to Portland, Oregon, and they have fruits and vegetables there I've never even seen before, let alone tasted. I may find something new that I really like!

What about you guys?

I guess mine would be to plant a larger vegetable garden. Larger than last year anyway. I'm sort of an amateur gardener and I made some rookie mistakes last season that I plan to fix this season. For one I didn't plant enough. So I'll have more fresh home grown food, and I also plan to can it also. I already have a pressure cooker/canner I just plan to use it after my harvest!

I haven't really thought about it, but one thing that comes to mind is to tackle the art of making gnocchi!

And maybe to get together a recipe binder instead of having a mess of magazines, scribbles, and web-bookmarks.

I am doing the same thing, helping my mother redo her kitchen. She chose an awesome buttery yellow color for the walls, with white trim and cabinets, and black appliances and countertops.

Definitely! And no, I never even heard of them. I also want to try that fruit that's in your icon.

I looked at your journal and we seem to have a lot in common. Care to add each other?

sure thing.

as for the dragonfruit in my icon, unfortunately i haven't seem them for a few weeks, so i'm not sure if they're having trrouble with their distributor, or they just can't get them anymore (i don't think it's a seasonal thing as they're coming from SE Asia as far as i know).

My usual resolution is to try everything at least once. Otherwise I'm full of it when I say I don't like it. ;-) I'm Mostly settling on resolving for certain kitchen gadgets. They will allow me to do more cooking. And that's another resolution that never changes: cook more.

Hey! I already do all five! But I'm most excited about #3. Last year we doubled the size of our veggie garden, bought a tiller and installed an automatic irrigation system so I am planning the best garden ever!

Almost all of our Christmas gifts were from our garden and orchard: cherry brandy and cherry liqueur, various chutneys, jams and pickles, none of which are readily found in stores. I was so proud to present such personal gifts, but also avoided the rush and crush of shopping madness in December.

I love preserving so much that I asked Santa for a steam juicer for Christmas. I designed my kitchen with preserving in mind; it has two sinks, a six-burner gas stove (in user pic) and a four-burner electric stove to accommodate a hot water bath and two pressure canners.

I don't believe in New Year's resolutions, per se, however, I can say that, since I just bought The American Institute of Cancer Research's The New American Plate cookbook, I plan on incorporating a lot of those recipes into our dinner rotation at home.

Also, I already started ensuring my sodium consumption was lower, and my omega-3 and fiber consumption was higher, so I plan on continuing that through the new year.

to rely less on freaky pre-packaged fake meat products. just because its vegetarian doesnt necessarily mean its better for you!

pretty much to only buy pre-packaged things that have a small handful of ingredients.

To actually make dishes from ALL of my multitudinous cookbooks.

To bake more bread "by hand" rather than in the bread machine (a resolution that may be made easier by the demise of my bread machine just in time for Christmas dinner).
